– NOTICE –

EMERALD ASH BORER HAS BEEN FOUND IN NY

The infestation was initially reported to the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets on June 15, 2009, by Rick Hoebeke, an entomolologist at Cornell University. Although the insect was anticipated, its presence will result in significant changes in both rural and urban woodlands throughout the state. An Internet webinar will be offered on Thursday June 25 at 10:00 AM (eastern). Participation in the webinar requires a high-speed Internet connection and speakers to listen.  The webinar will address the insect, its potential impact in New York, options for management, and identify sources of information.  The webinar will be interactive and presented by Mark Whitmore of the Cornell University Department of Natural Resources.  The webinar is free, but participants must register through www.ForestConnect.info to receive the URL to connect.  More information about webinars is available at the ForestConnect website.  The webinar will be recorded and available for subsequent viewing. Webinar technology is made available through Cornell University Cooperative Extension.  More information about the emerald ash borer in New York is available at http://nyis.info
If you have previously registered for webinars through ForestConnect, you do not need to re-register.

The NASS - USDA has released the “MAPLE REPORT” June 2009.

Summary:

New York maple syrup 2009 production increased 10 percent from last year’s production.

Syrup production is estimated at 362,000 gallons, up from the 328,000 gallons produced in 2008.

Vermont and Maine produced more syrup than New York.

The number of taps, 1.51 million, increased 4% from last year.

Syrup produced per tap averaged 0.240 gallons, up from 0.227 gallons in 2008.

The final value of the 2008 crop is $13.9 million, 82% above the previous year’s value of production.

The overall price was $42.40, an increase of 27% from last year’s price.

Sugar content across the State this year was lower than last year, but sap quality was  good.

Medium syrup accounted for 46% of production, with 45% dark and 9% light.

Producers in the North Country reported an above average season but dry conditions.

Elsewhere around the state, producers had an average season.

Temperatures started out too cold and quickly turned too warm.

Most producers agreed that the syrup had excellent flavor.
